This initiative was led by Yvonne Cook, president of Highmark Foundation and vice president of community health and programs at Highmark Health, who challenged fellow corporate women leaders and the greater Pittsburgh community to donate remaining cookie inventory in support of the food bank and local Girl Scouts. GSWPA Service Day Ideas

There are so many ways to get your Girl Scouts involved in making the world a better place, and community service is an awesome way for girls to take on issues in their own neighborhoods and communities. Not only will it help set up interest for this year's Take Action projects, but community service projects strengthen the bonds between the girls and bring them closer together.

When you participate in GSWPA Service Day on Saturday, September 26, you'll be able to make an impact in a big way as we come together as a council to benefit our communities all across western Pennsylvania.

Tips for GSWPA Service Day projects

From a small project to maybe something bigger, start by reading through some of our best tips for a successful project.
  • Start by talking to your Girl Scouts about volunteering in the community. Be ready to take notes! They will most likely be overflowing with ideas on how to help others.
  • Once you have an idea, reach out to organizations for their specific needs to make sure your work will be as helpful as possible.
  • About 2-4 weeks before GSWPA Service Day, gather or purchase any supplies and be sure to receive permission when planning projects in public or private places.
  • Bring an expert to a troop meeting for the girls to interview, take them to potential sites for observation, or help them with internet research.
  • Always refer to the Safety Activity Checkpoints for best practices and safe work.
  • Staying true to the girl-led aspect of Girl Scout programming, their GSWPA Service Day project should involve more than having girls show up and take direction from adults. Cultivate their leadership through active participation in all aspects from planning to execution!

Never underestimate the power of a Girl Scout!

Girl Scouts of all ages can participate and make a difference. Whether you have troop money to put towards a project or if you are looking for a project with zero to low cost, here are just a few ideas to get you started!

Daisies and Brownies:
  • Make blankets or toys for a local animal shelter.
  • Decorate bags or placemats for a meal delivery service.
  • Learn to make shelters for bees, birds, or other animals and place them appropriately.
  • Plant a butterfly garden at your school or park.
Juniors and Cadettes:
  • Clean trails at a nature center by clearing brush and trash.
  • Volunteer for a community program at a library, youth organization, etc.
  • Repaint worn benches in a community park.
  • Make bird feeders for a senior living center, a local park, or other community area.
Seniors and Ambassadors:
  • Make and serve meals at a local shelter.
  • Pair up with younger Girl Scouts to teach a skill or help with a project.
  • Work with your local municipality to plant trees and flowers at a park, library, or school.
  • Paint over graffiti in public places with permission from businesses or local municipalities.
Ideas for all ages:
  • Assemble hygiene kits for a woman's shelter.
  • Organize a game night, ice cream social, or just a visit at a local senior living center.
  • Collect art supplies for your school or local children's hospital.
  • Offer to decorate a storefront, library, or municipal building for the coming fall season.
Remember to invite local media to cover your GSWPA Service Day activity. Your Girl Scouts are doing amazing work, and their community will be excited to celebrate with them! For help contacting media, reach out to Stef Marshall at smarshall@gswpa.org.

2020 Joyce M. Murtha Excellence in Community Service Award recipient announced

GSWPA is pleased to announce our 43rd annual Awards of Distinction in Johnstown, a community dinner to benefit our council and celebrate excellence in community service.

Monday, September 28, 2020
Sunnehanna Country Club
Johnstown, Pennsylvania

Presented by:

Our annual community awards dinner in Johnstown has been a tradition for more than four decades. The event builds critical support to keep the Girl Scouting tradition strong in the greater Johnstown region, especially to reach new populations who may not otherwise have access to Girl Scouts' leadership programming.

The luncheon is presented by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield and promises to be sponsored by numerous more national and regional companies. John Polacek of JWF Industries is the Event Chair along with Event Committee members Michele Adams, Jack Babich, Timothy Brown, Becky Styles, and David Zucco.

The dinner features a Girl Scout flag ceremony and testimonial, an inspiring keynote address by a local community leader, and the presentation of the Joyce M. Murtha Excellence in Community Service Award to an individual or couple who embodies the award namesake's values of improving the community through service, philanthropy, and leadership.

We are pleased to announce this year’s recipient of the Joyce M. Murtha Excellence in Community Service Award, Linda Thomson, President of Johnstown Area Regional Industries (JARI). JARI is a full-service economic development agency headquartered in downtown Johnstown. Thomson has worked personally and in her role at JARI to increase the quality of life in the Johnstown community.

“Linda has been instrumental in the strategy to revitalize the greater Johnstown area economy," says Event Chair John Polacek. "She has worked to put us on the map once again by bringing commerce, industry, and jobs to the area I am proud to call home. Not only does she excel in her role at JARI but gives back through her service on numerous boards and in her faith community. That captures the spirit of Girl Scouts who work to make the world a better place.”

Girl Scouts is committed to bringing the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to all girls. In addition to our traditional volunteer-led troop model, our grant-funded outreach team serves more than 100 girls in four public housing communities in the Johnstown area: Solomon Homes, Coopersdale, Prospect Homes, and Oakhurst. Proceeds from this event will continue to support programming in the region and initiatives such as these to make Girl Scouting accessible to more girls.

Tickets are $125 each, or $1,000 for a table of eight.  We invite you to also consider a program book advertisement or event sponsorship, which includes tickets to the dinner.  To learn more and purchase tickets, please visit gswpa.org/johnstownAOD.

Fortunately, and before the public health crisis, we shifted the timing of our annual Awards of Distinction dinner benefiting Girl Scouts from spring to fall 2020 to accommodate Johnstown’s busy charitable calendar. We have every hope to host our full dinner program, but will be sure to monitor and abide by all safety guidelines and communicate to you any changes.

Congratulations to the winner of the GSWPA Holiday Card Art Contest

Once again, we invited Girl Scouts across western Pennsylvania to enter the GSWPA Holiday Card Art Contest to help our council create our 2019 holiday card. Girls were asked to create a piece of art in the theme of "Girl Scout Winter Adventurer" using any medium.

Congratulations to our finalists whose entries will be used in our digital card and are also available as printable holiday cards for girls and volunteers. The artwork from our winner, Bhawana B. of Allegheny County, will be the artwork on our printed holiday card which is mailed to community partners and supporters throughout our council.

This year's winning artwork was submitted by Bhawana B. of Allegheny County
“When I think of winter, I think of girls and boys playing outside as the white snowflakes fall as if they were dancing. Winter adventures mean spending time outside playing and having fun. Throwing snowballs, making snowmen, sledding, ice skating, and so much more. I wanted to create that vision of kids playing as a blanket of snow covers the ground as the sun goes down.”
-Bhawana B., GSWPA Cadette Girl Scout

Use Girl Scout artwork for your holiday card!

GSWPA received so many amazing submissions as part of this art contest, so we decided to make each finalist into a printable holiday card. The artwork, instructions, and even sample messages to help you get started can all be found at gswpa.org/holidaycard.

Thank you for celebrating your Girl Scout spirit!

As part of the month-long GSWPA Spirit Celebration in September, girls, volunteers, and their families celebrated their dedication to Girl Scouts in the most Girl Scout way possible—with fun, friendship, community service, and, of course, a patch!

Checklist challenge, accepted!

Girls challenged themselves with a checklist of activities to showcase why they love being a Girl Scout. Girl Scouts who completed 10 checklist items earned the Girl Scout Spirit patch. Twenty Girl Scouts won a patch through a random drawing.

Girls ROCKED the checklist, which featured 30 ideas for letting her Girl Scout spirit shine! Here are just a few moments that Girl Scouts shared with us:

GIRL SCOUT PROUD. Mercedes, a new Daisy, showed her Girl Scout spirit by putting up the sign “A Daisy grows here” at her home and preparing her first care package for a local shelter.

FAVORITE BADGE, PATCH OR JOURNEY. Flora is determined that she will work for NASA someday. She loved working on the space badge this past month with her troop!

BECAUSE OF GIRL SCOUTS.  Over the summer, Alexa and Rogue went camping at Girl Scout camp for a weekend (Me & My Gal), which was outside of their comfort zone as they had never camped before. We were all a little nervous, but had so much fun—they didn’t want to leave and were asking to go back next summer before we even left!

To help people at all times

Girl Scouts of all ages made an impact in a big way by participating in GSWPA Service Day on Saturday, September 21. Nearly 300 Girl Scouts pledged to do community service on this day. Here are a few of the amazing ways they helped make their corner of the world a better place:

  • Madisyn, a Junior, helped at St. Luke's Lutheran Church and School with the framing of three houses with the congregation. All three houses will be placed and finished in different locations in Butler county for veterans.
  • Avery, a Brownie, cleaned up litter and debris around her neighborhood with family.
  • Troop 17024 cleaned, weeded, planted, and painted to beautify Clarion County Park.
  • Rebeka, a Brownie, delivered thank you cards and waters to the police officers and other first responders in her community.
  • Morgan, a Daisy, donated food to the local pay-what-you-can restaurant in DuBois, where she also helped by serving customers and cleaning.
  • Troop 16373 packed food bags for their school's weekend food in a backpack program.
  • Hailey, an Ambassador, weeded around the veterans’ memorial in a local park.

Thank you to all the Girl Scouts and volunteers who helped make GSWPA Service Day a success!

Be sure to mark your calendars for the GSWPA Spirit Celebration in September 2020!

Update from Ranger Jonathan: From the storms that passed through on Tuesday night, the worst of the damage was to the footbridge that crosses the Connoquenessing Creek, which will require repairs. Other affected areas include the camp's amphitheater area and corral, which remained underwater late Wednesday morning. As of this morning, there’s nothing new to report from last night, but we’re not in the clear yet. The flash flood watch has moved to today, from 11 a.m. through this evening.

Following severe storms, our Camp Redwing in Butler County experienced flooding, and we are bracing ourselves for more storms; the nearby borough of Zelionople was declared to be in a state of emergency.

At Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania, safety is our top priority. The road to Camp Redwing is currently open, but we ask that no one visit the camp at this time. We will provide updates regarding usage of camp facilities and plans for cleanup and repairs as information becomes available.  We are committed to making Camp Redwing safe and ready for a season of summer fun and adventure as soon as possible.

Girl Scouts always ask how they can help their communities in times of need.  Here are some ways Girl Scouts, our families, and neighbors can step up to help Camp Redwing and the affected communities:

  • Help your Girl Scouts research local disaster relief organizations that provide support to families affected by the storms.  Girl Scouts can volunteer, donate items, or give troop proceeds to organizations helping those in need.\
  • Soon, we will be coordinating a cleanup day to make GSWPA Camp Redwing safe and ready for summer. Please use this form to let us know that you're interested in lending a hand!
  • Gift online or by check to Camp Redwing: You can make a gift to help Camp Redwing at http://gswpa.org/donate

We will provide additional updates here as information becomes available. If you have any questions, please contact us at 800-248-3355 or customercare@gswpa.org.

A Weekend of Service to honor Girl Scouts

From May 17-19 Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes (GSNWGL) created A Weekend of Service in honor of the lives tragically lost in Troop 3055 last November.

Girl Scouts in their council and across the country are encouraged to participate in a service project as a way to continue the work that the troop began. Girls who participate in a service project through this program are able to order the GSNWGL Weekend of Service Patch. The patch must be ordered before June 15.

For ideas and more information about A Weekend of Service, review the patch guidelines.

A Message from Robin Kelley, Leader of Troop 3055:

Everyone in our troop here in beautiful Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, enjoys the many activities we do each year, especially the outdoor activities. We value nature and the beauty of the outdoors and it is a lot more enjoyable when there isn't garbage everywhere. This is why, on November 3rd, 2018, our troop decided to participate in an Adopt-a-Highway program. We knew that this service project would make a difference and once we got out there, we couldn't believe the trash we found! In my group alone, we found lots of cans and plastic bottles, and even an old fishing pole and a tire.

Unfortunately, our activity ended tragically when a driver crossed the centerline and went in the ditch at full speed killing three of our Girl Scout members, one being my daughter. We lost one adult helper who was the mother of one of the girls we lost. One girl, an older sister of one of my troop members, was seriously injured and survived miraculously. She continues to amaze everyone with her recovery every day.

We are devastated but know that one of the best ways Girl Scouts across the nation can honor these four beautiful people that we lost, is to continue the work we began. All service projects that help our environment are so important because this is our earth to take care of and you can make a difference! Help us honor the memory of those we lost by continuing their work and thank you for all that you do in Girl Scouts.

All I really needed to know, I learned in Girl Scouts

On Monday, April 1, the following speech was delivered by retired Colonel Karen Esaias at the 42nd annual Awards of Distinction dinner in Johnstown as the keynote address for the evening.

Colonel Esaias stands with Johnstown area Girl Scouts, who officially commenced the evening's events by leading attendees in a traditional flag ceremony.
When I was invited to speak at this event, memories of my own Girl Scouting days ran through my head: earning badges, selling cookies, and overnight camp at Camp Conshatawba. All I really needed to know, I learned in Girl Scouts.

In the Girl Scout Promise, I pledged to do my duty to God and my country. I chose to do my duty to my country by serving 27 years in the U.S. Air Force. There are many ways to serve, with more opportunities open to girls and women unavailable even a decade ago. When I entered the Air Force, only 7% of the service branch were women, some of whom thought they had to be like one of the guys to fit in. In the course of my career, I saw that change. Women and men began to realize that diversity in the unit was a strength—and now, the Air Force is 20% female. The lesson is that each unique person on a team brings skills and insight that makes the whole more powerful.

I do have a confession to share: I was a quiet and shy kid. My sister Kathy loved selling cookies door to door—I did not! In the end, my father made Kathy take me with her and made her split the sales with me.

I don’t know what makes someone grow into a leader. Once, I was talking to my commander and I mentioned my being quiet and shy. He looked me square in the eye and said, “Captain, you may have been quiet and shy in the past, but you most certainly are not now!”

We have mentors in Girl Scouts, older girls willing to share skills and experience with the younger girls. In the Air Force, I saw the importance of mentors—and the particular importance to mentor people that don’t look like you! I was in a small group of women in the Air Force and was blessed to have officers who were kind enough to take the time to mentor me.

Let me circle back to how the influence of Girl Scouting affected my life. Girl Scouts pledge to do our duty to God. In the military, our oath of enlistment for the last 200 years has us swear to protect the Constitution of the United States against all enemies and to bear true faith and allegiance to the same. Our nation and the Girl Scouts are anchored in the belief that through our service, we are serving God. This has never been more important in our country than it is right now. It is truly the bedrock upon which our Constitution was founded and is a bedrock of Girl Scouting.

The Girl Scout Law is called the Girl Scout Law for a reason—these are founding principles. If all of us lived up to these principles every day, the world would be a better place. Let’s talk about a few of those principles: honor, helpfulness, and self-reliance. I carried these principles during my military career and they still define me.

Honor: Adherence to what is right. I recently had to decide whether to withhold troubling information from a life-long friend. I could not—I had to do what was right despite the potential repercussions. A girlfriend of mine in the Air Force used to say, “We are the people who stop at stop signs in the middle of the night, even when there is no one around.” Listen to the Girl Scout Law and do what you believe to be the honorable thing in every circumstance.

Helpfulness: A Girl Scout is helpful, so look for ways to help others in your community. In my world, the focus of my efforts since returning to Johnstown eight years ago has been helping veterans—those who have served need and have earned our support.

And finally, self-reliance: As a Girl Scout, I learned how to make things, how to build a fire, and how to follow a trail. In the Air Force, I learned how to make decisions, how to light a fire in my troops to encourage them to do what they believed impossible, and to blaze a trail, not simply follow one. Loyalty, honor, leadership, duty to God and country—all I needed to know, I learned in Girl Scouts!
